For this classic challenge we re-visit a forgotten masterpiece

We decide to see how far we can get in the games hardest setting

Firing up an old classic on an amazing new cutting edge platform

For this challege we used Google Stadia to play the re-mastered edition

I am old enought to have purchased Doom 64 back in the late 1990's when it came out. The Nintendo 64 still remains as my all time games console, I loved everything about the games and experience at the time. Even the way the console handled lighting and 3D graphics to me offered a superior game quality to its rivals. Unfortunatley my Nintendo 64 is in no longer with me, regreattably I sold it to get a Sega Dreamcast, another awesome console I wish i would have kept. There are rumours Nintendo will release an N64 mini, I am crossing my fingers for this and will be first in line to pre-order!

Back to Doom 64 then. Doom is one of the most culturally significant games ever, not only did id Sotfware push the entire PC gaming market forward it was the brainchild of the Van Gough of video game design, John Carmak. John Carmak was behind the iconic Wolfenstein 3D and Spear Of Destiny which again I played to death back on a Dell 386 system running MS DOS. Doom took hellish vibe of heavy metal satanic iconography and applied it to a future sci fi Mars setting. The original game was amazing, however for the lucky few that played Doom 64 it offered a darker and more sinister gaming athmosphere. The game was totally re-designed by Midway games so it is not merely a re-hash of an existing game onto a new platform, Doom 64 harnessed the true power of Nintendo's technology.

Doom 64 is a bit like if Kerry King from Slayer decided to design a video game.

Playing the game on Google Stadia is fantasitc

Play on any platform supported by Google's cloud technology

This game was a pleasure to re-visit, with better frame rates and crisper graphics all running on Stadia's amazing cloud based platform I was soon immersed back into the game. The maps are complex and the level design means that you are always in a state of suspense, one thing to mention is that this is a very moody and dark game. The lighting is purposfully dark to build supense, you never quite know who or waht is lurking around any given corner. The bad guys in Doom 64 are a bit more menacing than in the original version of doom and Cyber-Demon and the Baron of Hell are particulalrly terrifying.

The challenge should you choose to accept it

How far can you get in Doom 64 nightmare mode without being taken out?

Doom 64 is one of the hardest games I can remember playing back in the day. So we could not thing of anything more hellish and tricky that a fight for survival in nightmare mode, the aim is to see how far you can get withoug dying in the games hardest setting. I allowed myself a week or so to start playing the game again, i quickly was back into the swing of things. So thought it was a good time to run the gauntlet, if i could get through the first level i would be chuffed.

If i could make it through the first level in nightmare mode I would be chuffed

Check out the video below to see how I got on

Welcome to hell, it's going to be a hard challenge for this El Clasico
