Top 11 movie inspired video games

The first Mission Impossible film is not only the best of the franchise it was directed by legendary director Brian De Palma (Scarface, The Untouchables). The film still holds up to this day and has an iconic opening sequence set in Prague when their mission goes catastrophically wrong resulting in Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) having to go on the run and find out the answers why. So after seeing this awesome movie back in the day, it was fantastic to pick up a copy of Mission Impossible the game two years after seeing it in the cinema. 

Back in 1998 N64 was king as far as I was concerned. The gameplay and experience from games such as Mario 64 and Zelda: Ocarina of Time were truly groundbreaking. So to have next level 3D gaming experience as Ethan Hunt was an exciting prospect back in the day. This game did not disappoint and it had layers of complexity combining stealth and needing to outsmart enemies combined with innovative action sequences. Revisiting this game today you can see how it inspired the Hitman series. 

The game has a great soundtrack and one of the highlights is a cool sniper mission set in London, the action takes place in Waterloo station with you picking off enemies and protecting an asset who is boarding the Eurostar. The game has an amazing array of spy gadgets and weapons, you can also change outfits and complete missions in a multitude of ways. Your mission should you choose to accept is to check out this underated classic. The game does not self destruct after you complete it sadly. 

This game is bonafide multiplayer classic, its all about gang brawling and street fighting. It's as if Streets Of Rage was brought up to date by amazing game designers with the power of Playstation 3 and XBox 360 to match. The Warriors is a niche 1970's gang movie that Rockstar Games decided to focus on and create what is one of their most underated games. The multiplayer feature was a staple game to play with friends with a few beers on a gaming night in. One of the best tiles on Playstation 3, it is a game that is often forgotten about when people reminisce over the 2000-2010 decade. 

As a lifelong Terminator fan I have learned to be a bit of a skeptic when it comes to anything new in this franchise. The only Terminator movies that matter to me are 1984's The Terminator and 1991's Terminator 2 Judgement Day. Everything else is a total waste of time, including the new Dark Fate movie! I won't spoil it for you, however if you cherish the memory of Edward Furlong's iconic John Connor I would steer well clear.

Anyway I decided to jump into Terminator Resistance, which is available on Steam currently. It takes place in the post apocalypic future where Skynet rules supreme and John Connor is leading the resistance in the war against the machines. Any Terminator fan will remember the classic flashback scenes in the first and second movies which feature awesome T-800 metal endoskeletons brandishing dual laser machine guys with awesome robot tanks and jet powered drones flying overhead. This game re-creates this world perfectly and it has so much great stuff to explore for fans. You even get to make friends with a dog and call it either 'Max' or 'Wolfie'. It is a great FPS romp and is a refreshing break away from other FPS titles with such James Cameron inspired missions to enjoy. 

This game took the mechanics of Max Payne and dialled them up to a whole new level. Hard Boiled is one of the best movies ever to come out of Hong Kong cinema and Chow Yun Fat is a total bad ass. Having his likeness in the game with great graphics and having it set in the seedy back streets of Hong Kong is an inspired territory to build a game around. From the get go its insane acton where you can use bullet time and action movie jumping abilities to take out literally hundereds of enemies. If you have only played Max Payne, you really have missed out what the game engine is truly capable of when you play this John Woo inspired gem!

This is as close as you can get to being in Ridley Scott's 1979 classic Alien. The game is a staggering acheivement in atmospherics and terrifying AI. What is innovative about the game is the realism upon which it portrays the Xenomporph as a truly terrifying force that can only be dealt with by using brains over brawn. The sense of terror is something that makes this one of the closest a video game has gotten to invoking the sense of impending dread that made Alien such classic. An absolute gaming classic and one of the best games of the last then years. 

For anyone who is a fan of the Back to the Future trilogy this game is an absolute joy. Using good 3D animated graphic and some of the best sound design and voice over acting I have ever heard in a game makes for one of the most enjoyable classic style role playing games ever. This game is very much set in a similar tradition to titles like Monkey Island, Full Throttle and Day of The Tentacle. What also makes this game amazing is that it features Christopher Lloyd and some of the original cast, it also was overseen and produced by Bob Gale and Robert Zemekis. The game has some amazing puzzles and hilarious cut scenes. Also great that it is available on pretty much any platform including iOS and Android! Even though its ten years old, it is definatley worth checking out!

This is inspired by a mash up of two movies, Robocop and Terminator featuring together in one game, a bit like Alien Vs Predator (another game that desireves an honorable mention). This game was actually quite rare back in the day, a friend of mine had it on the Sega Mega Drive. As far as side scrolling platform shooting games go this is pretty awesome. Anyone who is a fan of games like Contra on the NES will love the mechanical bad assery that can be had by playing as Murphy. One of the highlights is the ED 209 sub boss battle, definatley worth blasting out some Guns n Roses and revisiting for some 80's nostalgia!

This is three full size games in one, it's such an ambitious game and amazing that they managed to pull this off back in 1996. When I first got my hands on a Playstation in the mid 90's a lot of the games sucked, it wasnt until games like Grand Thef Auto, Resident Evil and of course Die Hard Trilogy landed a year after launch that the platform became the uber cool. 

Die Hard Trilogy is quite an astonishing game, it features three in one. The first game is a 3D platform/ action shooter where you play John McLane and have to eliminate bad guys with a range of weapons, the game is great as it has official sound clips of Bruce Willis when you do cool things within the game. The second is a bit like Virtua Cop or Time Crisis, you travel through an airport and its a scrolling shooting game where you have to despatch terrorists and save hostages. The thrid, and my favourite is a bit liek Crazy Taxi where you have to race across New York in a yellow taxi with Samuel Jackson shouting at you with great one liners. For the Gen Z generation, you really dont know what you have been missing!

Peter parker has never been so much fun. Taking a leaf out of the Grand Theft Auto school of thought you can web spin your way across New York City and engage in all types of missions and sub missions as a true crime fighter. 

This is the greatest game of a generation and it nails the essence of 007 throught every element. You can keep your 200 player Call Of Duty Warzone battle royales. Nothing is as fun as playing multiplayer with your friends in the Facility map with Remote mines. The single player is equally amazing, there are even some secret levels including a tribute to Moonraker featuring a giant space shuttle.
