How Fall Guys became the hottest game of summer 2020

In terms of the gaming world, the summer of 2020 belonged to Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout. According to Sony, Fall Guys is the most downloaded Playstation Plus game ever. In this article, we will be discussing 11 reasons why I think a battle royale themed game featuring Jellybeans became the hottest game of the summer 2020.

Everybody loves a free game. Free to access games always have an extra appeal to their lowrisk element. If you don't like the game, you delete it. No money lost. However if you enjoy it and it's free your more likley to appecuate the game, thus spend more hours playing it. This is something we have seen previously with games like Fortnite, this summer Fall Guys has seemingly been handed the baton and are centrainly running with it!

Anyone that has played Fall Guys will agree that it's a game that can be picked up quite quickly. Many games require hours of hard work and dedication in order to learn how to play the game effectivley, Fall Guys have passed on the complexity and gone with a more simplistic approach, where you can literally learn the controlls in minutes. Every game has skill gaps, so you do get the players whjo know all the little tricks, but lack of still isn't so costly as the variety of modes and levels gives everyone a fighting chance.

This is a game you can confidently play in front of your parents or children without any concerns. More importantly you can get them involved! It is a "fun for all" type of game, where you can take turns and pass the controller around. The colourful, simple party design is sure to get the whole family's attention

If you are the type of person that likes playing games that are not too competitive or serious, then Fall guiys is likely for you. Fun is the focus, as you battle it out in a 60-player online free-for-all in the pursuit of beinf the last one standing. Additionally a lot of people love obsical courses and/ or enjoyed watching TV shows like Takeshi's castle, so the prospect of engulfing yourself in a game focused on these things is likely one of the major factors that made Fall Guys so popular this summer.

Simply put Fall Guys went viral. There are many marketing strategies game companies use to ger their games out there, going viral is any marketing teams jackpot. Whether it was snippets on social media, video gameplay content on YouTube or popular games live streaming on Twitch, there is no doubt somewhere donw the line, you saw the oddly clothed jellybean on your sceen in some capicity. This alone is enough to get most people intrigued, but the engagement is likely what make you decide to download and try the game ot for yourself. Truly a masterclass in how to market a game succesfully.

One thing that cannot be underestimated is the power of infleunce. When you see your favourite content creators making fun video whilst playing Fall Guys, you immediatley want to try it. We saw creators teaming up in the same lobbies as well as creating side challenges. The game makes it very easy to make great content, all you need to do is play it! Nothin more, that is what many of the succesful creators were doing and their fans loved them for it

One of the biggest selling points from me when I'm looking at new games to play is the ability yo easily play with friends. A game that combines socialising with fun is always likely to succed as it created high retention and encourages word of mouth. "Come and play this new game with me, it's free" is usually all it takes for me.

Life is all about facing obstacles and overcoming them, it is human nature to want to test your abilities to solve problems. If you take a concept like Total Wipeoput and turn it into a free game that is accessible to everyone, its going to get great numbers. The expression "challenge accepted" comes to mind.

The restrictions created by the Coronavirus pandemic has meant many people are spending more time in doors than every before. The result of this is finding more ways to keep yourself entertained and mind engaged as it was th ened game on the block. Although we probrabably would have prefered to be outsidfe enjoying the great weather this summer, Fall Guys offered us a fun alternative that made the idea of being inside not feel so bad. Well played. 

The simplicity of the game what makes it great. Think about it. "Fall Guys", It's in the name. You run around and fall a lot. As well as this, you are runni\ng around with jelly babies with the most basic of vlothing. We all love the thought of provoking games that can challenge our skills and brain power but sometimes it is nice to sit back, relax and play a game that is triucky but simple to grasp. Not to mention the sweet tooth that may occur as a result haha!

With Fall Guy's season 2 recently annoucned, it seemes as though the creators of the game aren't ready to take their foot off the pedal just yet. I'm sure some people wished they jumped on free games like Fortnite when they first came out so they can be a part of the game and its evolution first hand. I imagine many players have banked on Fall Guys having a similar trajectory

All in all, Fall Guys was definately the breakthough game of the year. Although there are a number of factors that led to this, albeit intentional or unintentional the fact still remains the same timing is everything!
