The Mortal Kombat-movie is coming: all upcoming videogame movies in 2021

Did you know that there are about twenty movies based on video games being made at this moment. The reason you are probably not aware, is that many of these projects are currently in a development hell. Some of them never get out of the storm, others do. For example Uncharted. No one thought that one would happen, but this year it is actually coming out. But first: Mortal Kombat.

It is quite interesting that in a world of thousands of loved video games, Warner Bros. has decided to make another Mortal Kombat movie after the very bad -and kind of funny- one from back in 1995. You can view the trailer for that movie below. As you can see it is very Mortal Kombat, and it is expected that the new movie, which is coming out in just two weeks (15 January on HBO Max). 

Alicia Vikander has proven to be a great Lara Croft in Tomb Raider 1, the movie that came out in 2018. Just three years later we can enjoy the sequel, as it will come out soon. It will probably be a bit more dark and sinister and have more to do with whatever happened to Lara Crofts parents. We are not entirely sure if this movie will make the release date, as we have not seen much of it yet, but it must come out this year, we do see that happening.

In the middle of the summer you want to go to a nice and cool cinema. Not just for your body temperature, but also to enjoy the Uncharted movie that has been in a development hell for.. well, forever. Thankfully we now know that no one other than Tom Holland will play Nathan Drake and the director is Ruben Fleischer, famous for Zombieland and Venom. Sounds pretty good, right? There is something funny about this movie, cause Mark Wahlberg was supposed to play Nathan Drake in this project back in 2010, but now he will play the older Sully instead. It’s the first movie by PlayStation Productions, which is supposed to become a whole cinematic universe of video game movies.

Though it has not resulted in great movies before, director Paul W.S. Anderson and his wife Milla Jovovich are back. That’s not as strange as it may sound: their movies actually perform pretty well at the box office. You might know their Resident Evil movies, but this time Milla is asked to chase very different monsters. Monster Hunter the movie is based on the Capcom action RPG, very loosely though, so real fans might feel that it is not Monster Hunter enough. We shall see, on April 23rd.

2022 already has two video game movie releases

too. We will get the Sonic the Hedgehog sequel in April 2022, and first The Minecraft Movie in March 2022. Plus, there are also movies in the making of Call of Duty, The Last of Us, Watch Dogs, Mass Effect, Dante’s Inferno, Temple Run, Rabbids, Five Nights at Freddy’s, Deus Ex, Splinter Cell, Far Cry, Ghost Recon, Kane and Lynch, God of War, Devil May Cry, Metal Gear Solid, Heavy Rain, The Sims, Asteroids, Borderlands, The Division, Firewatch, Fruit Ninja, Gears of War, Gran Turismo, and Portal.

Whatever happens, always keep your expectations as low as can be. There are not many videogame movies that are over 50 percent on RottenTomatoes and there truly is a reason for that. Gamers know the world that a movie is based on so well, they are used to having the control over their characters and well, game movies are usually not made by excellent directors or game fans. Nothing to be sad about: it is good to see that gaming truly is a medium on its own. Plus: it is hilarious to watch old video game movies, like Doom. They are so tacky that they will definitely create a big smile on your face.
